It is disgusting and pathetic to shame or discriminate someone for loving someone else, or being themselves. With many forms of love you would think the world has accepted people loving the same gender or being transgender but suprisingly there is still a huge amount of discrimination for people the LGBTQ+ community. One of the biggest issues is bullying for teens in the community. Mant teens who openly share their sexuality are faced with bullying. Many LGBTQ+ kids are bullied by peers. With this bullying many kids and teens in the community turn to suicide or self harming. Suicide is the most leading cause of deaths among gay and lesbian youths. Over 30% of the suicides committed are by kids and teens in the LGBTQ+ community. Along with high suicide rates approximatly 28% of gay and lesbian youths drop out of school due to discomfort. Many of these issues for the teens and kids are caused by lack of support from families or guidance counselors or friends.
Though bullying is a huge showcase of discrimintaion there are many other kinds shown in the LGBTQ+ community. One of the biggest ones is the way people used words like “faggot” and “gay” to mkae fun of something or show that something is stupid or uncool. Along with that many families discriminate against their children if they are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. While some families may just make fun of their children or neglect them mentally there are many children who are kicked out of their homes for loving who they love or their sexual orientation. Roughly 40% of homeless youths are a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Many LGBTQ+ students face abuse whether it is mental or physical. One girl said she had to face months of harassment and verbal threats until one day she was hit in the back of the head with an ice scraper. Along with that 25% of LGBTQ+ students dropout of school due to the harassment they face at school. Another incident was a kid was hit in the back of the head with a beer bottle and had to crawl to his nearest friends house for help. Mental and physical harassment is only a small part of the discrimination LGBTQ+ kids face.
Many parents have a part of how the kids may feel or how comfortable they will be with themselves. If a child in the LGBTQ+ community has an accepting family they will be more likely to accept themselves. Sadly many kids don’t, 26% of LGBTQ+ kids are forced to leave their homes due to their sexual orientation. Along with that in a study of 194 gay and lesbian kids 25% were verbally abused and 10% dealt eith threatened violence or actual violence.
No kid or teen should have to go through this. When bullying gets to someone so much they feel they have to quit school or kill themselves it shows that there is too much. The fact that it is 2020 and people still can’t wrap their heads around the fact that people can love whoever the hell they want is stupid. People need to be acceptin gof whoever someone wants to love and they precentages and discrimination will go down.
